Yorkshire Water‘s apprentice scheme came out with another company first, with two of the latest recruits to the scheme earmarked to receive support through a degree course.

With its January 2015 announcement, Yorkshire Water committed to significantly increasing the total number of apprenticeships offered over a five year period, in what is the biggest scheme yet of its kind launched by the company. Many apprenticeships like this one can be found through apprenticeship training providers which can be tailored to a persons wants and needs – pushing them to excel in whatever they do and bring both the company and the apprentice much success.

Up to so far, most of the apprentices recruited have been placed in operational roles with Yorkshire Water looking to recruit the next generation of up-and-coming skilled colleagues to operate at the heart of providing a crucial service for millions of people in and around the region. The range of college courses the apprentices are currently studying makes for some impressive reading, including Level 3 Computer Systems, Level 3 Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, HNC Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Level 5 Human Resource Management and Level 5 Surveying.

Victoria Ellwood and Thomas May from Huddersfield and Wyke in Bradford respectively have recently joined the Land Services and Valuation, and the Land, Property and Planning teams as trainee surveyors. The duo will be receiving full support from Yorkshire Water through a degree course at the University College of Estate Management and they’ll be based in Bradford, the company’s headquarters, when not busy working in the fields with experienced colleagues.

Part of what the apprentices will learn covers how Yorkshire Water manages its assets, while aiding in the support and facilitation of the acquisition of land and property or rights, the effective management of these interests and the disposal of those interests no longer required by the business.

Shauna Purdey, Director of Human Resources at Yorkshire Water, said; “We’re delighted to have Thomas and Victoria join us on this exciting new adventure which illustrates how we are supporting apprentices at all levels. Our graduate scheme, apprenticeships and trainee positions offer young people the chance to study for a qualification whilst gaining practical experience.”

A number of initiatives, including the number and levels of apprentices, have been put in place to ensure that we attract talent from the widest pool possible and we are very proud to launch our first degree apprenticeships.”

Victoria said; “I’m delighted to start my apprenticeship with Yorkshire Water as it means I can earn a salary whilst getting a qualification in my chosen field. There are many different options for young people leaving school or college these days and this was the best one for me.”

In contrast, Thomas’ application for the apprenticeship came only after he decided to change careers, a move which clearly demonstrates just how appealing apprenticeships are to mature students who already have work experience as well.
