Idaho is one of the most beautiful states in the country. Those who have visited will agree that it is probably the best-kept secret of the U.S., if not the world. It’s funny because while it’s the 13th biggest state in the union, when people are asked if they’ve ever been to the pine laden mountains or bathed in any the hundreds of pristine lakes the state has to offer, people just scratch their heads. People commonly think you’re talking about Iowa or Ohio. If they do know what and where Idaho is, they’ve often never been and think that all the state is good for is potatoes.

If you haven’t been to Idaho, you’re really missing out. It is home to some of the most beautiful landscape you will ever witness, and since much of the state is covered with steep mountains caused by centuries-old lava flows, the steep cliffs make much of the state uninhabitable, which is the reason only 1.6 million people occupy the land.

While Idaho is a great place to live and to visit, it’s not the greatest of places to start a business and make a living. There are ups and downs of course, and some people do very well, but let’s talk three in particular:

Minimum Wage Is A Joke

Idaho has been known to be the kind of state where news travels very slowly. If anything is going to get done, it’s going to be a very progressive change. Although the cost of living in Idaho is relatively low compared to many states, the minimum wage is a measly $7.25 an hour. With the health care system the way that it is, businesses won’t hire full-time employees, so people are forced to work 2 or 3 minimum wage jobs to make ends meet. At least the scenery and other awesome qualities of the state make up for the gap, because it’s pretty ridiculous.

Things Take Time

This point was touched on above, but in Idaho, news travels pretty slow. If you want a burger made, you’ll be waiting in line at Paul Bunyan for 30 minutes, and that’s so-called “fast food”. But the burger is worth the wait. If you have an issue with the state, or you’re seeking a service like credit repair, it might take you a while to complete the process. Who knows if Idaho is last on the federal government’s list of states to pay attention to, but if you’re doing business in Idaho, you’ll have to fly elsewhere to expedite processes for sure.

Californians Have Taken Over

In Idaho, people make fun of Californians all the time. They can’t drive in the snow, they stop dead in their tracks every time they see a wild animal, and they’re surprised at the level of customer service because they’re used to nobody caring in their homeland. Working in Idaho, especially in the pretty and popular parts, you’ll encounter a lot of Cali folk. Best thing to do is just take their money and smile and wave. They’ll all be gone when winter hits, anyway.
