4 Careers Available with an Art Degree Jan 4th
Do you enjoy letting your creative juices flow and making a masterpiece? Find yourself sketching every chance you get? If so, you may be a prime candidate for an art degree. Getting to pursue a job in the field you love and are passionate about is everyone’s dream. Included here are a few opportunities available to you if you choose to pursue a career in the fine arts.
Art Gallery Curator
While many art galleries are run by dealers, they often choose to have experienced artists on staff. These are people who can contribute to purchasing decisions and help evaluate artwork or show topics. If you chose to pursue a job as a curator, you would want to have a wealth of knowledge about many artists throughout history, many artistic styles and be able to work well with people.
Park West Gallery is a phenomenal example of a man who started a gallery without being a professional artist. Scaglione was incredibly interested in art from a young age and was excited to purchase genuine art pieces for his parents. This created a passion in him to bring art to the masses which he did in creating the experience that is Park West.
Freelance Artist
If you are genuinely committed to your craft and wish nothing more than to indulge in it for the rest of your days, choosing the life of a freelance artist may be just the passion for you. You will have to be good at promoting your work for sale and good at overcoming creativity roadblocks. This is a life that will likely have very inconsistent paychecks but could be very fulfilling overall.
Graphic Design
A more stable choice for the artist is the career path of graphic design. Many companies employ a graphic designer to run promotional ads, create fliers and promote marketing within their business. This would be more of a nine to five job and could be preferable over the inconsistency of freelance if you are wanting to raise a family and settle down.
Teacher
Some artists wish nothing more than to share the joy of creativity with others. If you are of that persuasion, pursuing a career in teaching would be the best option for you. Working with students in elementary or middle schools will allow you to introduce them to different artistic mediums and help them hone their skills.
If you are more interested in the history of art, consider choosing a career teaching art fundamentals. You would most likely be employed in a college setting and be able to work more on the history of individual artists and geographic locations. This is more of a book and paper style of teaching as opposed to open paint pots.
