‘Going green’ is the only way that businesses ensure that they will last and successfully operate into the future. The phone sector has not been left out, with eco-conscious mobile companies releasing eco-friendly phones. It is such companies that are really making the world a better place.

Do you care for the environment? For the love of our dear planet, we should all try to go as ‘green’ as possible, including replacing regular phones with eco-friendly mobiles. Regular phones contain harmful components like PVC, zinc, phthalates, arsenic and flame retardants. All these chemicals have extremely adverse effects, especially if leached to water supply and the ground.

However and fortunately, eco-friendly phones are the exact opposite; PVC-free, degradable and recyclable. ‘Green’ mobile phone providers make a huge positive difference in the amount of harmful scrap in the landfill and help in conserving manufacturing resources.

Here, we will look at green mobile phone companies and some of the eco-friendly models they have released. Remember, it is the little things we do that can either conserve or destroy our planet.

Apple Inc. might be famous for their expensive and impactful iPhone releases, but did you know that their phones are eco-friendly? Since the iPhone 6, Apple has worked to improve the eco-friendly standards of their phones.

One way the iPhones are eco-friendly is that they have recyclable casings. iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone S8 have a recyclable aluminium body. You will also be glad to know that iPhones neither have mercury nor beryllium. The above iPhones are PVC free and models like the 6S, have a speaker enclosure with about 30% post-consumer recycled plastic. Also, the iPhone 7 comes fitted with an arsenic-free display glass.

The Microsoft giant-company is in our list of our ‘green’ mobile phone providers. From manufacturing to packaging, it is evident that Microsoft is eco-friendly. For example, their printed guides are small, which means they minimise paper use.

Among their eco-friendly models are Microsoft Lumia 532, Lumia 532 Dual SIM, Lumia 500, Lumia 650 and Lumia 535 Dual SIM. Microsoft phones are free of Nickel, brominated flame retardants and PVC. The phone’s’ materials and packaging are fully recyclable, with Lumia 535 Dual SIM coming with a printable guide, instead of the traditional printed manual.

Fairphone will always be globally remembered by ‘green-enthusiasts’ as the first providers of an ethical modular phone. The company has tried to balance ‘cool’ and ‘green’, with the Fairphone two having a 12MP camera. You can now take selfies and help conserve the environment too!

The Fairphone phone has been designed to be easily repairable and durable. The company even provides repair tutorials! The materials used to make Fairphone 2 are recyclable plastic and aluminium. You also don’t have to buy an extra case, because the Fairphone 2 already has a robust back cover.

Fairphone encourage customers to keep their phones for as long as possible. According to them, you should only replace your phone if it cannot be repaired or used anymore.

Samsung has also made significant efforts in protecting the environment, by releasing eco-friendly phones. Samsung models like the Captivate, are known for having the lowest radiations, GHG emissions and the most recyclable components.

In models like the Samsung Blue Earth, the green mobile provider has integrated a solar panel. Samsung Blue Earth achieves a remarkable 36.4% reduced battery usage, just from one hour of sun exposure. If you expose the phone to the sun for 12 hours, you get 4 hours talk-time.
